President Jonathan's Zoo Gets N37.5M

Image
The federal government budget just released informed the nation that the sum of N14.5million was set aside for the addition of two animals to the presidential zoo at the Aso Rock Villa. N23m was also budgeted for wildlife at the Villa. This brings the total amount for President Goodluck Jonathan’s animals to N37.5m, for just one year. Expectedly, this is eliciting outrage from some Nigerians, who see it as yet another exhibition of the now routine wasteful tendency of the government in power. And as if that was not bad enough, N1.6billion was voted for the 11th aircraft in the president’s fleet. From Nigerians who have become immune to shocks from the spendthrift propensity of this administration, the reaction is silence. For this group of Nigerians, what is N37.5m compared to the $49bn reported to be unaccounted for by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC)? Or, for that matter, the billions stolen from the pensions fund? This nature of expenditure in...

New Year Message To The Nation From The Office of The President Federal Republic of Nigeria

Image
Dear Compatriots, I greet and felicitate with you all as we enter the year 2014 which promises to be a momentous one for our country for several reasons, including the fact that it is also the year of our great nation’s centenary celebrations. I join you all in giving. thanks to God Almighty for guiding us and our beloved nation safely through all the challenges of the outgoing year to the beginning of 2014. Exactly 100 years ago today, on January 1, 1914, the British Colonial authorities amalgamated what was then the separate Protectorates of Southern Nigeria and Northern Nigeria, giving birth to the single geopolitical entity known as Nigeria. For us therefore, today is not just the beginning of a new year, but the end of a century of national existence and the beginning of another. It is a moment for sober reflection and for pride in all that is great about Nigeria. Whatever challenges we may have faced, whatever storms we may have confronted and survived, Nigeria r...

More Governors Will Soon Leave PDP - Amechi

Image
Rivers State Governor and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, said at the weekend that the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) has already failed the leadership test in the country and needs not strive to be the custodian of leadership in the future. For perhaps the first time since his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), the governor was explaining to journalists in Port Harcourt why he believes even more state governors will abandon the PDP and join the APC. He accused the PDP of perpetrating injustice and promoting maladministration in the country. According to him, the APC was aggrieved by PDP’s poor performance, and if voted into power, would bring about the needed change nationwide. He recalled the political pressure being brought on the state by the wife of the President, Patience Jonathan, whom he accused of attempting to ‘micromanage’ the state. He also bemoaned the fact that President Goodluck Jonathan ha...

Image
Vice President Namadi Sambo is spending a fortune to furnish and upgrade his official residence and guest house, two projects costing N2.1 billion and lingering since his election alongside President Goodluck Jonathan in 2011. In three years leading up to 2013, the government has spent a minimum of N300 million annually to furnish and upgrade the vice president’s residence and guest house, according to past and present federal budgets. The biggest spending -N900 million- for the upgrade and furnishing was done in 2011. Obasanjo's Squad Will Derail Jonathan's Presidency If He Fails To Fight Back - Chido Nwangwu

Image
Based on Obasanjo’s military antecedents, power attitude and drawing from my reading of his history as a leader, he will Not — for lack of a better word — “forgive” Jonathan despite his references to God and Christ, and to the great Nelson Mandela the same week as a forgiving leader. To be sure, Obasanjo does not have the forgiving spirit of Mandela….http://usafricaonline.com/2013/12/19/why-president-jonathan-should-fight...USAfrica, December 19, 2013: To fully make sense of Obasanjo’s December 2, 2013 letter to Jonathan, you should follow the key point of my analytical deduction which I refer to as Obasanjo’s unspoken historical burden; namely, for the 3 times where he exercised partisan power and influence in Nigeria’s presidential election history, he has faced unpleasant twists, unexpected and unsatisfactory outcomes: 1979 (he supported Alhaji Shehu Shagari, NPN, removed in a military coup in 1983); 2007 (he personally picked an ill Alhaji Umar Yar’Adua, PDP, who died after ...

Image
The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) and the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas (NUPENG) workers have renewed their threat to shut down the oil sector if the federal government goes ahead with its plan to privatise the refineries. According to them, selling the refineries without their participation would amount to shaving their heads in their absence. The two oil workers unions that spoke in their reaction to the setting up of a steering committee by President Goodluck Jonathan to oversee the process, also told Thisday yesterday that the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) must be passed as a pre-condition for the sale of the refineries. Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo's Womanising Urge Knows No Bounds - First Wife

Image
The first wife of the former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo has broken it in spectacular style with a tell-all autobiography, Bitter-Sweet: My Life with Obasanjo. The author paints a portrait of her husband as a vindictive " master of decoy ", a "violent and unrepentant wife-basher ", and a man whose "womanising urge knows no bounds ". It couldn't come at a worse time for the 72-year-old Mr Obasanjo who has been busily building a new profile for himself as a pan- African statesman second only to Kofi Annan. What ensues is an almost slapstick riot of affairs and breathless high politics punctuated with domestic violence and desperation. And it's one in which Mama Iyabo is happy to name names. In the early 1970s her particular nemesis was an older married woman called Mowo Sofowora. One evening, she recalls: "I was eavesdropping on the phone downstairs while Obasanjo was inthe bedroom. They had spoken for about 30 minutes when sh...

Image
In what is turning out to be a season of open letters, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Iyabo, has ruled out further communication with her father till death, describing him as a liar, manipulator, two-faced hypocrite determined to foist on President Goodluck Jonathan what no one would contemplate with him as president. Senator Iyabo Obasanjo in a letter to her father accused him of having an egoistic craving for power and living a life where only men of low esteem and intellect thrive. Olusegun Obasanjo and Iyabo Obasanjo In the 11-page letter dated December 16, 2013 exclusively obtained by Vanguard, Iyabo accused her father of orchestrating a third term for himself as president, cruelty to family members, abandonment of children and grandchildren, and also, a legendary reputation of maltreatment of women.
